I think it's very important for every student to be kept up to date with what economics related things are going on at LSE and how they can become more involved in our community.

Meet Sanjana Chanda (BSc Economics, Year 1)

sanjana-chanda

Hi everyone! My name is Sanjana and I am currently a first-year BSc Economics student. At present, my passion and interests lie within the global economy and on exploration of how certain policies can help both developed and emerging countries grow sustainably. However, I am keen to explore new areas of economics during my time here at LSE.

I signed up for the ambassador role as I wanted to improve communication between the Department and students. Furthermore, my goal is to make it easier for students to learn more about the Department via our social media pages by making them more interactive so allowing easier access to important information/events. As a team, we have come up with several ideas to improve this student-department relationship. For example, I am particularly looking forward to interviewing members of the faculty!

I hope to meet these aims by working as an ambassador and am extremely looking forward to working with the rest of the team and even speaking to some of you in the future.

Meet Aleksandra Furmanek (BSc Economics, Year 2)

aleksandra-furmanek-300x300

My name is Aleksandra and I am a second-year student of BSc in Economics. I have only discovered how much passion and enthusiasm I have for this subject during my first year at LSE when I was studying PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics). Having realised that out of the three subjects it is economics that I enjoy by far the most I have transferred into the Department of Economics.

I have applied for the role of Student Communications Ambassador because I would like to contribute to the workings of the Department I have just joined. I think that it is very important for every student to be kept up to date with what economics related things are going on at LSE and how they can become more involved in our community. I hope that the coverage produced by my wonderful team and I will fulfill that purpose.

We have plenty of exciting ideas for this year ranging from interviews with faculty, covering academic events, tackling the topic of women in Economics, or giving tips on applying to Master’s programs. I hope all of these will prove useful to you!

Meet Marie Ogino (BSc Economics, Year 1)

marie-ogino

Hi everyone! My name is Marie, and I am a first-year BSc Economics student! Through economics, I’m able to engage with and gain a thorough understanding of current events by contemplating proposed policies based on structured models and theories. The empirical strategies used in economic research fascinate me and, in my future, I hope to pursue a career in policymaking! As such, I chose LSE for the incredible opportunities it offers- from world-class faculty to its location in the heart of London. In addition, as I’ve lived in five different countries, I was looking for a university that could offer an international experience- LSE was able to offer this kind of diverse experience.

My experiences living abroad have also shed light on the considerable disparities in some essential components of life across different communities. Thus, in my spare time, I volunteer to gain a better understanding of the problems that afflict my local community and to give back (In fact, I am also a Student Volunteering Ambassador!).

I was drawn to the role of the Student Communications Ambassador because I believe it is important for us as students to know and take advantage of all that LSE has to offer, especially during these uncertain times.

When I’m not reading research papers, writing blog posts or volunteering, I go on runs with my friends (favourite places to run include St Katharine’s docs and Regent’s Park). Feel free to reach out and I hope you enjoy our content!

Meet Bess Zhang (BSc Economics, Year 2)

What motivated you to study economics?

When I was doing history in my high school, I realised that economics plays a key role in the development of countries, and I want to discover what shapes the world we are living in today and studying economics is a good starting point.

Why did you choose LSE?

Because I want to understand “the causes of things” ;)

What drew you to the Student Communications Ambassador role?

The Department of Economics is the largest department at LSE with so many staff and students, either doing undergraduate or postgraduate study. However, from my first-year experience, I don’t know many people from our own department, and some of my friends in the Department told me they also face the same problem, so I want to help bring people from our department closer.

What do you like to do outside of your studies?

I’m a huge foodie who loves everything related to food, from restaurant reviews, to cooking, to food photography. I’m really glad to be elected as the President of the Food and Cooking Society and have chances to share restaurants worth visiting, creative recipes and food cultures.

What would someone be surprised to know about you?

If I am going to take a gap year, I would like to attend Le Cordon Bleu for the year as I cannot really travel around the world during the time of Covid-19.
