BSc Economics

I chose this programme because I loved learning, and I knew that LSE was the best place to challenge me intellectually. The lecturers in the Department are some of the best in the world in their field, and everyone is so dedicated and passionate about what they do, which leads to a truly excellent learning experience. There's so much support as well - you'll always have someone to go to if you need any help, whether academic or personal. But just as much as the faculty, I have learnt so much from the other students, who come from all over the world. Just being around so many different people and having lots of interesting discussions has definitely been a highlight.

Moritz Hauschulz
BSc Economics

I chose economics as it offers not only theoretical frameworks for understanding the world around us, but also highly applicable, empirical tools. At LSE I learn from experts in their fields and the Department of Economics’ lively environment gives ample opportunity to develop additional skills, ranging from coding to self-directed research.

My outside options have allowed me to explore my interest in mathematics more thoroughly, but courses are available from a variety of related fields such as politics or philosophy.

My advice to future students would be to get involved in at least one of the many societies and clubs, as this is where you meet friends and build your network.

BSc Economics

I chose this programme because it offered a deep understanding of economics along with a wide range of outside options and many empirical activities such as research and economic workshops.

BSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics

After two years of studying economics at LSE, I was keen to write a quantitative thesis. For economics students, this option (EC331) is unique to BSc EME and so I switched to the programme in my third year. Writing my thesis was the most difficult, most fun and most rewarding part of my degree and it prepared me well for my job as a pre-doctoral research assistant. As well as a solid foundation in micro, macro and econometrics, you learn a lot about empirical methods and statistical programming, which are powerful skills. The programme provides excellent training for careers in economics research - whether that’s at a university, the government, an NGO etc.

At LSE we are exposed to a very high standard of economic analysis and a very broad range of subjects. This programme has a balanced emphasis on economic theory, econometrics, and analysis. The lecturers are excellent, and the class teachers are dedicated to their teaching. Many of the LSE faculty are deeply involved in policy advising in the government, business and finance areas, and this means that what we’re learning is not divorced from the real world, and we can really see the practical use of economics.

What I particularly love about the EME programme is the opportunity to work with top-notch faculty in economics. For the quantitative project in the third year, everyone is assigned a supervisor who is a dedicated and experienced researcher. I find this opportunity incredibly valuable in terms of getting you to think like a research economist and consider if a PhD is right for you.
