Since 2015, he is the founder and chief economist of his consulting vehicle, Lorenzo Codogno Macro Advisors Ltd, and Senior Fellow of the LUISS School of European Political Economy in Rome, on top of his LSE position. Prior to joining LSE, Lorenzo Codogno was chief economist and director general at the Treasury Department of the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (May 2006-February 2015). He was in charge of the economic analysis and planning directorate. He held responsibility for macroeconomic forecasts, cyclical and structural analysis on the Italian/international economy, and analysis on European and international monetary and financial issues. He coordinated the technical preparation of Italy’s official economic and financial planning documents, notably the Stability Programme and the National Reform Programme (Document of Economy and Finance). He headed the Italian delegation at the Economic Policy Committee of the European Union, junior committee of Ecofin (May 2006-December 2009 and January 2012-December 2014), where he was chairman (January 2010-December 2011) and vice-chair (January 2008-December 2009). As chairman of the Economic Policy Committee he attended Ecofin/Eurogroup meetings with Finance Ministers and moderated the Macro Economic Dialogue. He was also chair of the Lisbon Methodology working group attached to EPC (November 2006-January 2010).

At the OECD, he was chairman of the Working Party 1 (January 2013-December 2014; vice chair between October 2007 and December 2013) and head of the Italian delegation at the Economic Policy Committee (May 2006-December 2014) and the Economic and Development Review Committee (Survey on Italy, May 2006-February 2015). He joined the Ministry in April 2006 from Bank of America where he had worked over the previous 11 years. He was managing director, senior economist and co-head of European Economics based in London. Before that we worked at the research department of Unicredit in Milan. He was member of the Board of Directors of ENEL, EU’s second largest power company (June 2006-May 2014) and member of the Board of Directors of MTS (now part of the London Stock Exchange, 1999-2003).

He was adjunct professor of Economics at LUISS University, Economics Department, Rome (2008/2009) and occasional lecturer at La Sapienza University and Rome III (Tor Vergata), the Italian Public Administration School, and Bocconi University. He studied at the University of Padua in Italy and has a Master Degree from Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY. 

Research Interests

Mr Codogno's main research interests include European integration and economic governance, especially related to economic reforms, the Europe 2020 strategy, the European semester and the fiscal framework; European and national strategies to enhance competitiveness, productivity and economic growth and growth theory; public finances, sustainability of public debt, EMU bond market developments and more broadly European financial matters.

Mr Codogno is the author of several articles on academic journals, newspapers and books, speaker at conferences, established commentator on economic and market issues. Before joining the Italian Treasury, he was regular commentator on international and Italian broadcasting services including CNBC, CNN, Bloomberg TV, BBC World. He is (or was) member of several economics associations and scientific committees, including  member of the Scientific Committee of the Academic Review Economia Italiana, the Villa Mondragone International Economic Association (June 2009-present), the Board of the University Foundation Economia Tor Vergata CEIS (November 2009-December 2014), the Scientific Committee at the Italian Labour Ministry to monitor labour market reforms (June 2013/December 2014), the technical working group set up by the Italian Parliament to translate the constitutional amendment on balanced budget and fiscal framework into secondary legislation (June-September 2012), the Steering and Planning Committee for Statistical Information of the Italian Statistical Office (December 2010-June 2012), the board of ISAE, a former leading Italian economic research institute (June 2007-December 2010).
