The return of Donald Trump to the US presidency has raised once again the spectacle of a new phase in the US-China trade war.  There have also been threats to impose tariffs on other trading partners. How will this situation impact upon the EU and the UK as both sides consider a reset of their trade relationship.

Meet the Chair and Speakers

Professor Chris Alden teaches International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) where he is Deputy Head of the Department (PhD and Research). He is also Director of LSE IDEAS. He is a Research Associate with South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA).

Ignacio Garcia Bercero has been a non-resident fellow at Bruegel since September 2024 and is a visiting Professor at the University College London since 2021.  He has been a fellow with LSE ideas and frequently given talks at LSE.  

Prior to his retirement in April 2024 he worked as director at the Directorate for Trade at the European Commission, which he joined in 1987. During his career he has been in charge of different aspects of multilateral trade policy (WTO,OECD,G7), trade policy strategy as well as being chief negotiator for the EU—Korea FTA,EU-India FTA and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership.

Garcia Bercero holds a Law Degree from the Law Faculty of Universidad Complutense , a Master of Laws Degree(Distinction) from University College, London and was a fellow at Saint Anthony’s College (Oxford).  He has written several papers on WTO matters and EU trade and regulatory policies.  Since he joined Bruegel he has published policy briefs on the EU-UK trade reset and on how the European Union should respond to Trump tariffs.
