About me

Dr Fang-Long SHIH holds a PhD from the University of London, jointly supervised by LSE Anthropology and the SOAS Study of Religions. Shih has since 2003 joined the LSE and worked as Research Fellow of Taiwan Research Programme in Asia Research Centre (2003-2016), in 'Research and Expertise’ (2016-2018), and in Anthropology Department (2018-2022). Since 2009, Shih has served as Co-Director (with Professor Stephan Feuchtwang) of the LSE Taiwan Research Programme. Shih also serves on the Board of Advisors of Global Taiwan Institute, a Taiwan-focused think tank at Washington DC (2016 onwards), and the Board of Directors for the American Association for Chinese Studies (2015 onwards).

Shih's research covers civil society and popular culture in Chinese-speaking world, recently focusing in particular on cognitive warfare (myth with regards to warfare), cultural war, (dis)information warfare, identity politics, memory politics, and transitional justice. Shih speaks Mandarin, English, and Fukien/Taiwanese fluently.

Shih has published academic papers extensively and has also undertaken international media interviews, such as by the BBC World TV News, the BBC World News-Impact, the World Tonight-BBC Radio 4, New York Times. Shih is a regular contributor to influential media on Taiwan and China, such as Liberty Times, Upmedia, Think Taiwan, Voicettank, Taipei Times, and Taiwan Insight.
