ID Careers Month 2024

Visit the ID Careers web page as a starting point for thinking about careers in International Development. It includes information, links to blogs that share insight into the sector and job boards for people seeking opportunities in development.

Slides from the events 'Introduction to Careers' and 'How to get into ID' can be found on Moodle. You can also look back at videos and slides from past 'Discover ID' events run through Career Hub. These provide information on different areas and pathways in the field of International Development and how to start thinking about your own career journey.

Throughout Winter Term we have be hosting a series of ID Alumni Lectures. You can watch back the recordings from the events on our YouTube channel. 

LSE Careers provides a wide range of resources to support students in their career journeys, including information and signposting, blogs, events, guidance, one-to-one consultations and more.

In October 2023, ID’s Careers Consultant Lewis Humphreys held an information session providing a helpful overview of services and resources available from LSE Careers. View slides from the session on Moodle here.

CareerHub is an excellent resource that runs activities such as skills workshops (including interview preparation and CV clinics), information sessions and networking events to support you on your career journey. You can also create a personalised dashboard on Career Hub, and search the job board for opportunities collated by LSE's Careers team.

As well as helping you to explore and plan you to explore options and plan for your future career, the LSE Careers Service has specific information and tools to help you enter the graduate job market and hosts recruitment events.

You can a book a one-on-one appointment with Lewis Humphreys or another of LSE's Careers consultants for tailored advice, signposting to resources, help with your CV or a specific job application or to set up a practice interview.

 LSE has a vast alumni network which is an excellent resource when you're looking to speak to people in roles or sectors you're considering for your own career. The LSE ID LinkedIn group is highly useful for this, and we recommend that you request to join if you have not already done so.

Keep in mind that once you finish your studies, you will still have access to the Careers Service as alumni.

Virtual Graduate Open Event

In November 2023, Dr Arjan Gjonça, Doctoral Programme Director and Dr Monika Kruesmann, PhD Programme Manager held a live online session for prospective PhD students. You can watch back the recording here.

Career Insight Event

In 2022, ID hosted an online event with a PhD candidate and alumnus from on what it's like to do a PhD in International Development. Current PhD candidate in the Department Sophie Legros and 2020 alumnus of the PhD programme Max Gallien, who is now a research fellow at the Institute of Development Studies, spoke about their experiences on the PhD programme in ID and pursuing careers in academia. You can watch the recording back here.

Steer your Career, is a podcast series by LSE Careers podcast. In 'Discover International Development: Episode 1' Careers Consultant Lewis Humphreys chats to LSE alum Morgan Jennings, who graduated with an MSc in International Development and Humanitarian Emergencies in 2021. She now works at the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED).

Inspired by the "Humans of.." concept of sharing stories originated by photoblogger Brandon Stanton in New York, Humans of ID is a podcast where students in the LSE Department of International Development sit down with classmates, instructors, and alumni to learn about their stories and how they are interacting with issues in, and approaches to, development. In these informal discussions, the Career and Professional Development team engages with guests, learning about their journey in the development field and discussing some pressing contemporary issues in international development.

MSc International Development and Humanitarian Emergencies student, Alice Storniolo has written a blog about her trip to Brussels for the LSE Careers Fair aimed to support students and alumni looking to work for EU institutions and the organisations that work with them.
