We are delighted to announce that Dr Megan Ryburn, Associate Academic at the Latin America and Caribbean Centre and an LSE Fellow in Human Geography, has been awarded a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship, commencing from September 2018 for three years.
The fellowship will support research entitled “Navigating borderlands: Colombian migrant women in Chile and experiences of violence” looking at migration in Latin America with a focus on Colombian migrant women in Antofagasta, Chile. Here, migration has increased significantly in the past decade, in part, it seems, as women seek to escape an atmosphere of gang-related violence and economic precarity on Colombia’s Pacific Coast. Through ethnography and interviews, Megan’s research will look at how these women negotiate transnational violence, making empirical and conceptual contributions to current research on migration. The research will be developed with the Latin America and Caribbean Centre and disseminated through workshops in Colombia and Chile and through conference participation.
