Introduction
The work of Exit Photography Group documented the growing inner-city crisis in London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Glasgow and Belfast in the form of interviews and photographs.
Documentary photography can be a powerful tool for social change because it can convey visual information and tell a story. You can use photography to create images that communicate a narrative, evoke emotion, inspire activism, or generate sympathy for a cause. Have you taken a photograph that does this? Would you like to try?
We want to see your images that resonate with the mission and ethos of the Exit Photography Group, to document the human condition. If you have taken photos that reflect social issues, exclusion, inequality, collective memory, or protest, then consider submitting them to the 2024 LSE Library Photo Competition!
Applicants will be considered to have their photos included in the LSE Library Gallery and three photographers will be selected for a cash prize. Judges include Paul Trevor (Exit Photographer) and professionals from Four Corners Gallery (London) and Amberside Gallery (Newcastle). We can’t wait to see what you submit!
Important dates
- Accepting submissions online from Monday 23 September to Friday 29 November.
- Announcement of the first, second, and third place winners: 18 December.
- To include in exhibition during month of January.
General rules
1. Eligibility
- Open to all UK-based photographers 16+.
- Entrants must be the original creators of the photographs submitted.
2. Entry submission
- Three entries per person allowed.
- Must be jpgs between 3.5mb and 10mb, at least 300dpi.
- Filename: title of photo.
- Submissions that do not comply may be rejected.
Content guidelines
3. Originality and rights
- Photos must be original and created by the entrant.
- No plagiarised or copyrighted material without proper permissions.
- Entrants retain ownership of their photos but grant the competition organisers rights to use them for promotional purposes.
- Organisers are not responsible for lost, damaged, or misdirected entries.
- Participants assume all responsibility for any claims related to their entries.
4. Ethical standards
- No offensive, obscene, or inappropriate content.
- Photos should not depict illegal activities or harm to individuals or animals.
- You confirm that anyone depicted in an entry has given their permission for the inclusion of their image and use of it by you and LSE.

6. Evaluation criteria
- Artistic quality, originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact.
- Adherence to the theme of documentary photography that reflects social issues, exclusion, inequality, collective memory, or protest.
