Professor Edgar Whitley Launches New Research on Identity Exclusion

With digital identities becoming increasingly important for many secure online transactions, this work will help to ensure that the resulting systems and processes are as inclusive as possible

Professor Edgar Whitley

Professor Edgar Whitley has launched a new research project on the economic costs of identity exclusion. The study, commissioned by Women in Identity, aims to understand the business impact and economic costs incurred by identity organisations due to identity exclusion.

The research will focus on the costs associated with supporting customers who are not on the ‘happy path’ for identity-related transactions. These costs could arise from customers who don’t have suitable ID, can’t get suitable ID, can’t use their ID, or need support for using the ID they have.

This research will contribute to an evidence base by interviewing programme managers, budget holders, directors of operations, and others who are responsible for and oversee areas affected by identity exclusion. The findings will be presented at industry and academic events and will be shared with members of the Women in Identity community.

The research project has received LSE Ethics approval and is currently seeking participants from around the world in all industry sectors.

Those interested in participating in the study can contact Professor Whitley to arrange a suitable time for the interview.
