Students studying for their doctorate degree at LSE’s Department of Management have had academic papers accepted at the 83rd Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management (AOM), the largest gathering of management and organisation scholars in the world. Two of the student papers have also had papers nominated for awards, recognising the rigour, significance and originality of PhD research in Organisational Behaviour at LSE.
The students, Muhammad Aqeel Awan, Anna Czaplewska-Jaffery, Caleb Phillips, and Rashi Sonal, make up the entire cohort of the MRes PhD in Management – Organisational Behaviour programme.
Muhammad Aqeel Awan’s paper on work engagement and multiple work identities, co-written by Dr Niranjan Janardhanan, is nominated for two awards, the prestigious Carolyn B. Dexter award – awarded to the paper that best meets the goal of "internationalizing AOM" – and the Managerial and Organizational Cognition (MOC) division level award for "Best Diversity paper".
Aqeel said of the award: “For me, [the nomination] means that the experts and scholars relevant to the topic are more likely to have a look at my paper, attend my presentation and offer their valuable feedback, which is what every early-stage researcher, who aspires to publish in top ranked journal, needs.”
Dr Janardhanan added that: “This could mean that we expand our visibility among scholars in the field, and that more people come to recognise the value of our research."
Rashi Sonal also received an award nomination in the Managerial and Organizational Cognition Division for Best Symposium, which sees several speakers discuss a common topic or theme to introduce new insights to the subject. In the symposium, Rashi will present her research paper, also co-authored by Dr Janardhanan, on identity construction in the workplace.
“I am thrilled to have the nomination”, said Rashi. “It indicates that our work is headed in the right direction and has the potential to advance knowledge about identity work of individuals who work outside the traditional boundaries of the workplace.”
The 83rd Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management will take place at the beginning of August in Boston, Massachusetts.
