Narratives of the self in encounter with alterity at times of crisis
Taking its point of departure in Kypseli (an Athenian neighborhood), Afroditi’s thesis aspires to explore local people’s experiences with migrants and refugees. The study offers an innovative approach by asking citizens to articulate their own understanding of the self through the experience of the migrant noncitizen.

Biography
Afroditi is a full ESRC DTP Researcher in the Department, studying the mediation of migration. She holds an MSc in Media and Communications (Governance) from LSE and a BA in Politics and International Relations from the University of Kent, where she received the School’s Colin Seymour-Ure Award for the best final year dissertation as well as the Undergraduate Scholarship for Academic Excellent for three consecutive years. She came to realise the power of the media in framing and defining the “refugee crisis” when she interned in the International News division of Antenna Group in Greece. This work experience in line with her involvement in the LSE “Migration and the Media” project inspired her to pursue an academic career and undertake a PhD to study the mediation of migration. Before starting her PhD, Afroditi worked on a project for a British government Department and for LSE’s Department of Management Communications and Events team.
