Fulya was awarded herPh.D. from the Social Science Institute in Marmara University where her thesis explored social change and Sufi orders in the case of Cerrahis in modern Turkey. She was a professor of Political Science in Yildiz Technical University from 2004 to 2017. She was a guest researcher in the Arab African Research Center and Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo between 2008-2009 and 2011-2012.
Her research concentrates on Sufi Orders, radical Islamic movements among Turkish immigrants in Germany, and modern Islamic organizations including political parties in Turkey. She is currently working on the comparison of the Islamic institutions in Turkey and Egypt.
