On 11th July 2019, SEAC will host a Southeast Asia Discussion Series (SEADS) event, with guest speakers Dr Petra Desatova (School of Politics and International Studies, University of Leeds), Mr Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit (Leader, Future Forward Party), Prof. Duncan McCargo (Director, Nordic Institute of Asian Studies and Professor of Political Science, University of Copenhagen) and Ms Pannika Wanich (Spokesperson, Future Forward Party), to discuss recent developments since the Thai General Election. Prof. Tim Forsyth (Department of International Development, LSE) will Chair.

Background:

In March 2019, Thailand held its long-awaited General Election following the 2014 military coup, with official election results finally announced on 8th May 2019. Although Palang Pracharath received the most votes and won 116 seats, Pheu Thai emerged as the largest party with 137 seats. Most of the remaining seats were won by the Future Forward, Democrat and Bhumjaithai parties. Pheu Thai and Future Forward announced a seven-party alliance soon after the election, but were ultimately unable to form a government. This SEADS event will offer an update on the current political situation in Thailand and provide insights on how the situation is likely to develop.

This event relates to SEAC's #governance theme.
