On 12th March 2020, SEAC is hosting a discussion panel chaired by SEAC Director Prof. Hyun Bang Shin, with speakers Ms Laura Antona (PhD Candidate, Department of Geography and Environment, LSE), Ms Dorothy Ferary (PhD candidate, UCL Institute of Education) and, via Skype, Dr Ying Hooi Khoo (Senior Lecturer, Department of International and Strategic Studies, University of Malaya), discussing issues relating to academic freedom in and on Southeast Asia.
Ms Laura Antona
"Migrant Labour, Violence and Resistance: Writing about sensitive issues in Singapore"
Laura is a PhD Candidate in the LSE Department of Geography and Environment and holds an MSc in Building and Urban Design in Development (Distinction) and a BSc in Urban Planning, Design and Management (First Class Honours), both awarded by University College London. In addition to studying for these awards, Laura has gained experiences working with local authorities in the UK and as a Graduate teaching Assistant at the Bartlett School of Planning (UCL) and at the LSE. Laura has also worked in South-East Asia and was one of the co-founders of a not-for-profit design studio, Catalytic Action.
Ms Dorothy Ferary
"Academic Freedom in Indonesia"
Dorothy is a PhD candidate and a Postgraduate Teaching Fellow at the UCL Institute of Education. Her research interests are education, gender, development, and youth.
Dr Ying Hooi Khoo
"Academic freedom and university autonomy: a focus on Malaysia"
Ying is the Deputy Head and Senior Lecturer at the Department of International and Strategic Studies, University of Malaya. She completed her PhD in Politics and Government examining social movements and democratization with a focus on Malaysia’s electoral reform movement. Her research interests include civil society, social movements, national human rights institutions, human rights and democratization with a regional focus on Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia and Timor Leste. Currently a columnist in a local Chinese newspaper, Sin Chew Jit Poh, Ying Hooi is the Editor-in-Chief of Malaysian Journal of International Relations (MJIR), and she sits in the Board of Editors with the Indonesian Law Review (ILREV).
