About me

Howard Glennerster began teaching in the Social Policy Department in 1968 and retired in 2001. He was Chairman of STICERD and other held other posts in the School as well as being an advisor to the Treasury and the Department of Health. 

He is an Associate of CASE.

His central interest has been in the finance of social welfare systems both in the UK and abroad. The third edition of his textbook Understanding the Cost of Welfare was published in 2017.  He is also the author of British Social Policy: 1945 to the Present and jointly with other members of CASE of Wealth in the UK

He is a member of the British Academy, the Academy of Social Sciences and the Royal Society of Arts.
