About me

Timo Fleckenstein is a Professor of Social Policy. He joined the Department as a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) after completing his DPhil at the University of Oxford. When not on Sabbatical Leave as in 2023/24, he convenes an undergraduate second-year course on “Comparative and International Social Policy” and a postgraduate course on the “Politics of Social Policy”.

Timo is a political scientist by training and specialises in the comparative analysis of welfare states with a regional focus on Western Europe and East Asia. He has a particular interest in labour market, skills and family policies. His research has been published in leading Political Science and Social Policy journals (such as World PoliticsComparative Political Studies, the Journal of European Social PolicySocial Policy & Administration, and Social Politics),  in addition to Asian studies journals more recently (namely, the Journal of Contemporary Asia and Pacific Review). He is very much interested in enquiries from potential PhD students to work on topics in his areas of interest.

Timo supervises doctoral studies in areas including:
Comparative political economy, comparative social policy, family policy, labour market policy, skills policy, policy-making process.
