The London Arts and Humanities Partnership (LAHP)

LSE is part of LAHP (London Arts and Humanities Partnership), which is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Students of all nationalities can apply for one of these studentships.

LAHP is a Doctoral Training Partnership co-funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and eight Higher Education Institution (HEI) partners:

LAHP funds up to 90 PhD studentships each year at these HEIs in subjects across the Arts & Humanities. 10 per cent of these studentships are Collaborative Doctoral Awards (CDAs) with a cultural or other external partner. There are separate competitions for CDA and open studentships.

The studentship includes an annual stipend at the Research Council UK Home (which for 2024 entry was £21,237) plus fees for three years full-time study. LAHP also welcomes applications for part-time study. CDAs are funded for three and a half years and include an annual stipend top-up of £550.

Studentships are tenable for three years and they cover full fees (for international students, LSE will cover the difference between UK and overseas fees) and an annual stipend, which for 2024 entry was £21,237. LSE will also cover full fees and stipend for an additional fourth year.

LSE Departments that typically host AHRC studentships are International History, Media and Communications, Philosophy and Law, but students from other disciplines (for example, Anthropology, Gender Studies and International Development), can also apply if their research falls within the remit of AHRC, as explained here

Registration for these sessions can be completed using the webform found here

How to apply

LAHP welcomes applications:

  • From ‘home’ and ‘international’ (including EU) applicants (Please refer to ‘International Students‘);
  • Across all of LAHP’s subject areas and approaches in the arts & humanities, including for inter-disciplinary and practice-based research (for the open competition);
  • From those who have recently completed their Masters’ programmes and those with relevant professional and/or practitioner experience;
  • From those wishing to study on a full-time or part-time basis;
  • From applicants of all ages and backgrounds.

Beyond the stipend and fees’ cover, LAHP supports funded students through its wide research training programme, which includes language courses, introductions to archives and collections workshops, equality, diversity and inclusion training, communication skills training (including public engagement and public speaking), writing retreats, academic and non-academic career development workshops and lectures and workshops on relevant topics.

LAHP funded students are also able to apply for additional funding to allow them to undertake fieldwork, present at conferences, and to take up specialist training beyond the LAHP research training programme.

LAHP also offers placement opportunities with major London cultural and other external partners to enable LAHP funded students to experience a working environment in a different sector from academia, discover new ways of working and new methodologies, and develop their employability skills.
