Our departments and programmes

The Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method

The Philosophy Department is very supportive. We have an academic mentorship programme set up with the professors. We are also integrated into a family system with the second- and third-year students who are on our course. It is absolutely an intellectually challenging and stimulating environment.

Top three reasons why you should study philosophy at LSE

  1. LSE philosophy specialises in a type of philosophy that is both continuous with the sciences and socially relevant.
  2. LSE philosophy graduates enjoy especially high career prospects.
  3. LSE philosophy hosts a rich and varied programme of conferences and events featuring some of the world’s leading philosophers. All such events are open to our students.

What is it like to study philosophy at LSE?

The three undergraduate degree programmes offered by the Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method allow students to take courses in ethics, metaphysics, logic, epistemology, political philosophy and philosophy of science. The BSc Philosophy and Economics and BSc Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) programmes also investigate economic issues and deliver a combined philosophical and economic analysis of public policy, including the moral limits of markets. Unlike other PPE degrees, this is a four year degree programme where all three subjects are given equal weighting and all are studied for at least the first three years of the degree. PPE students will undertake a Capstone and Research Project in their final year, working on an applied public policy project for a client organisation and producing a research paper.

Language specialism

Students who have taken and passed at least one language course in each year of their degree can opt to receive a language specialism attached to their degree certificate and transcript. The three courses must be consecutively harder in level, for example: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Students must take all courses in the same language (French, Spanish, German, Mandarin or Russian) in order to qualify for the specialism. Degree certificates which include a language specialism will state the language in the title, for example: BSc Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method (with French).
