The Widening Participation (WP) team works with young people from under-represented backgrounds in state schools and colleges. We aim to raise their aspirations and attainment, and to increase their awareness of their higher education options.

We also support current LSE students who have taken part in Widening Participation programmes in the past, or who come from groups that are under-represented in higher education.

Many LSE students support our Widening Participation programmes. Student Ambassadors help deliver activities for 10-18 year olds on-campus, virtually and at other locations (eg, London schools/colleges). Other LSE students support us as mentors or tutors.

The LSE Student Ambassadors role was created in October 2002 to give LSE students the opportunity to get involved with the work of Widening Participation and Student Marketing and Recruitment. LSE student ambassadors are essential to WP programmes, acting as inspiring role models and sources of information and support.

What does the Student Ambassador role involve?

As a Student Ambassador, you will have the opportunity to promote LSE and higher education opportunities to prospective students, parents/carers and teachers. Student Ambassadors will support a variety of in-person and online events for perspective students such as:

Online and In-Person Q+As with Schools/Colleges
Campus Tour delivery
Student Shadowing
Subject-specific activity
Student Information Sessions
Taster courses
Open days
Higher Education Fairs and Conferences

What are the benefits of being a Student Ambassador?

You’ll have an opportunity to make a difference to the lives of young people.
Build transferable skills such as leadership, communication, teamwork and organisation which are great for contributing to your CV and career/workplace readiness.
There will be opportunities to undertake training in areas such as safeguarding / child protection and effective online delivery.
Work offered is flexible to your availability.
You’ll be paid an hourly wage, including for training (currently £14.29).

In 2022/23, for the third year running, the Widening Participation Team are collaborating with Team Up, an education charity, which “works to reduce the widening attainment gap in education by helping underachieving disadvantaged pupils double their expected progress and improve their future prospects”.

In Lent Term, LSE Tutors will travel to one of our London partner schools, to provide in-person small group tutoring, under the supervision of teachers. Our two partner schools are located in either the Borough of Westminster or the Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

What does the LSE Team Up Maths Tutor role involve?

LSE Tutors will have the opportunity to raise students’ confidence and encourage them to consider higher education when they leave secondary school or college

LSE Tutors must commit to attend paid online training prior to commencing tutoring and will be required to travel to the school and attend for 1.5 hours of tutoring on the below dates. You will be paid for 2.5 hours each week (1 hour preparation and 1.5 hour delivery) plus your attendance at training and your travel expenses will be reimbursed. LSE Tutors will be placed on an LSE Hourly paid contract from mid December 2022 to end of March 2023 to cover the dates of the programme.

Training: In person training held in December 2022 – exact date TBC

Start date for Tutoring: w/c 16 January 2023

End date for Tutoring: w/c 27 March 2023

*No tutoring w/c 13 February 2023 due to schools half term

Day & Time of Tutoring: Tuesdays 16:00 – 17:30 OR Wednesdays 15:00 – 16:30

The LSE WP Team run two sustained 18-month programmes collaboratively with the Sutton Trust – Pathways to Law and Pathways to Banking and Finance. LSE Students are employed across two academic years to support the Year 12 and 13 students on these programmes, as Pathways Mentors.

What does the Pathways Mentor role involve?

LSE Pathways to Law Mentor:

This is a long-term paid opportunity for first- and second-year undergraduate LSE students studying: LLB Law, Law and Anthropology, and Anthropology. The role involves mentoring 16-18-year-olds through our Pathways to Law Programme from Michaelmas term 2022 to Lent term 2024. Events will be delivered both in-person and online throughout the programme. Throughout the programme, mentors will support students at programme events which take place typically once every 4-6 weeks. E-Mentoring will commence in July 2023. Mentors will be providing support, advice and guidance to students about pursuing a degree in law, university life and developing soft skills. There will also be an additional opportunity to apply to be a Team Leader at our residential National Conference held at Warwick University.

LSE Pathways to Banking and Finance Mentor:

This is a long-term paid opportunity for first- and second-year undergraduate LSE students studying a Finance related degree (e.g. Accounting, Finance, Economics, Mathematics). The role involves mentoring 16-18-year-olds through our Pathways to Banking and Finance Programme from Michaelmas term 2022 to Lent term 2024. Events will be delivered both in-person and online throughout the programme. Throughout the programme, mentors will support students at programme events which take place typically once every 4-6 weeks. E-Mentoring will commence in July 2023. Mentors will be providing support, advice and guidance to students about pursuing a finance related degree, university life and developing soft skills. There will also be an additional opportunity to apply to be a Team Leader at our residential National Conference held at Warwick University.

LSE Thrive is a sustained 10-month access programme for Year 12 students of Black heritage who live in or close to London (approx. 90 minutes from the LSE campus) and are interested in applying to study at LSE. Our Thrive Mentors will be responsible for mentoring our cohort of students throughout the programme

What does the Thrive Mentor role involve?

Thrive mentors will be supporting with the delivery of our online mentoring.
Mentors will be responsible for mentoring up to 3 students via our online platform for 20 weeks over an 8-month period.
Thrive Mentors will also have the opportunity to apply to work additional virtual and in person events related to the Thrive programme throughout the academic year including information sessions and campus visits.
