PhD students from the below list of partner institutions can apply to visit a particular LSE Department in order to utilise the research and networking opportunities available. The visit lasts for one academic term.
Whilst PhD mobility exchange students are expected to work independently, your designated scholar at LSE can advise you on your research.
Host advisors can assist you in a number of ways. For example:
- Regular catch ups to discuss your research and research plan;
- Introducing you to colleagues with shared research interests;
- Informing you about relevant seminars and lectures.
However, overall responsibility for supervision remains with your home advisor. You will be responsible for devising a research plan detailing how you intend to conduct research, attend seminars, network, etc.

Students interested in applying during the 2023-2024 academic year should be nominated by their home institution.
As part of the application process, you will be required to identify a suitable advisor at the School and prepare the following documents :
- Up-to-date curriculum vitae
- Short letter of support/reference from supervisor;
- Copy of your most recent PhD progress report (if applicable);
- Evidence of English Language Ability; and
- Statement of Academic Purpose explaining: Progress towards completion of your research; Why a visit to the host partner institution would benefit you and what you intend to do here; A timetable for your work during the visit; indicating the scholar(s) with whom you hope to work with.
LSE reviews the application and may request any further information required.
LSE’s Graduate Admissions Office will contact successful students by email and send them a letter of invitation.
Under the terms of the PhD Mobility Exchange Agreement with Partners, LSE will waive any applicable tuition fees for the duration of the research visit.
Students should make their own travel, accommodation and visa arrangements. They are also responsible for speaking with their host advisor before arriving to ascertain whether there will be space for them to work in the Department or whether they will need to work in LSE’s Library.
