Students at institutions with which LSE has a reciprocal exchange agreement join the School through the Global Opportunities (GO) LSE programme. GO LSE provides participants with an academic year of fully-integrated undergraduate study. LSE does not offer single semester study abroad. Students enjoy comprehensive access to all the School’s academic and pastoral support services and facilities.
Academic entry requirements:
GO LSE students are expected to have completed two years of university level study by the time they join the School. Students from Hong Kong must have achieved cumulative grades of 3.3 out of 4.3 at the point of application to the GO LSE programme.
Application process:
The GO LSE team will send HKU a link to the online application in January 2025. Nominated students should submit their completed applications as soon as possible, and no later than 30 April 2025. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis.
After a student has applied to the GO LSE programme, the GO LSE team will communicate with them directly; but will also copy all correspondence to their named advisor. Nominated students should not consider themselves accepted on the GO LSE programme until an official offer has been issued, in writing, by the School.
Required documents:
- In addition to the completed online application, LSE requires:An official transcript(s) in English (or official transcript(s) and certified English translation(s))
- A statement of academic purpose
- Proof of English language qualification
Housing:
GO LSE students who accept their offer and make an accommodation booking by the published deadline are guaranteed a place in LSE or University of London accommodation (subject to availability). Information on available student accommodation can be found here. Students seeking private housing can find information here.
Courses and assessment:
GO LSE students select four full-unit year-long undergraduate courses (or the equivalent in half-units) from the 300+ available each year. Detailed course guides can be found in the School’s Calendar. GO LSE students should read the information for ‘General Course’ students.
Whilst some courses have mid-year (January) exams the vast majority are formally assessed just once at the end of the academic year, in May/June. All GO LSE students receive a transcript providing both an exam grade and a class grade for each course they have taken. Transcripts are only issued at the end of the academic year, upon completion of the programme.
Orientation and Welcome:
Mandatory orientation and ‘Welcome’ activities take place the week before teaching begins. These include an introduction from the Dean of the General Course and Global Mobility, a Study Abroad Boat Party, departmental meetings and initial tutorial appointments. Full pre and post-arrival details will be provided in the GO LSE Offer Pack.
UK Student Visa:
All HKU students who don't have a British passport will be required to obtain a Student visa to enter the UK and enrol on the GO LSE programme. The GO LSE team is not permitted to offer visa advice but the School’s Student Advice and Engagement Team (SAET) provide detailed guidance on their webpages. If you have any questions regarding immigration to the UK and the student visa please contact SAET by completing their online enquiry form.
Healthcare:
GO LSE students will be required to pay an immigration health surcharge (IHS) as part of their Student Immigration Permission application fee. This entitles them to access National Health Service (NHS) care at no additional cost on the same basis as a permanent UK resident. Private medical insurance is not required but is recommended for students travelling outside the UK. Note that students may need to pay for dental and optical treatment as well as prescribed medicines.
