Academic Director's Scholarships

LSE is delighted to announce the launch of the Academic Director’s Scholarships for Summer School applicants who have shown a passion, exceptional promise in the areas of:

  • Sustainability and Development;
  • Responsible Leadership; or
  • Technology, Media & Society

These scholarships are designed to help students wishing to broaden and enrich their university career with the opportunity to participate in the LSE Summer School. The scholarships aim to help recipients gain a global perspective, achieve academic excellence and develop civic leadership skills.

Informed by the research interests of LSE’s Academic Director for the Summer School, Professor Susana Mourato, the scholarships aim to equip students with the skills to engage with some of the critical challenges facing our world today.

The Academic Director’s Scholarships support LSE’s 2030 Vision and will be informed by the 2030 guiding principles, namely to:

  • Sustain excellence through an inclusive and diverse community
  • Extend our impact and reach
  • Ensure a sustainable future

The scholarships will be awarded to students who are accepted on the identified Summer School courses for which the scholarships apply. Two awards will be given in each category (Sustainability and Development, Responsible Leadership, and Technology, Media & Society).

The scholarships are merit based and offer holders will be invited to submit an application, consisting of a short statement of purpose, for the scholarship once they have been given an offer to participate in the Summer School.

Scholarships will only be awarded to current University students or students who have an accepted offer to attend University in 2021/2022.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I progress my Academic Director’s Scholarship Application?

Answer: If you have been offered a place on one of the eligible courses you will automatically be invited to complete the scholarship application process. You will receive an email from the Summer School admissions team soon after the 16th of April. At this point you will be asked to provide us with additional information, including a statement of motivation, to be considered for the scholarships.

2. Should I delay paying my course fees until I receive news about the scholarship?

Answer: There are limited scholarships available, and they will be assessed on a merit only basis. You will need to continue processing your fees as a normal LSE Summer School applicant. If you are awarded an Academic Director’s Scholarship we will refund your course fees.

3. How long do I need to wait before I know if I have been awarded the scholarship?

Answer: Academic Director’s Scholarship winners will be announced in early May once all applications have been assessed and considered. You will need to continue to pay your course fees. Only if you have been given a Scholarship would we begin the process of refunding your fees.

4. Can you confirm my Summer School place is secure whilst I await the outcome of the scholarship?

Answer: Tuition fees should be paid within 30 days of receiving your offer email, as your place on the programme is only guaranteed once we have received full payment. If you subsequently receive a scholarship, we will then begin the refund process.
