Academic direction by LSE
LSE is a member institution of the University of London and provides the academic direction for the EMFSS programmes. This means that LSE:
- Determines the programme curriculum
- Plans the course structure and content
- Develops and writes the study materials
- Sets examination papers and marks examination scripts

Professor Paul Kelly
Dean, University of London EMFSS programmes
Professor of Political Philosophy, Paul Kelly joined the LSE in 1995 and leads our EMFSS programmes. His research interests include multiculturalism, theories of social justice and liberal political philosophy.
Dr Francesco Nava
Academic Director, Online Taught EMFSS Programmes;
Programme Director, Online BSc Economics
Dr Francesco Nava is an Assistant Professor in Economics and the MSc Economics Programme Director at LSE. He is STICERD Theory Group Programme Co-Director. Dr Nava completed Ph.D. at the University of Chicago, and his research interests include Economic theory (Networks, Bargaining, Repeated Games) and Industrial organization theory (Decentralized Pricing, Dynamic Pricing).
Your Programme Directors
Your learning support
As part of your studies, you will be required to attend live online sessions led by your class teachers. During these fortnightly sessions, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss key concepts, clarify your learning for the fortnight, and interact with your class teachers and fellow classmates. You will also have the opportunity to engage with your class teacher via the course wall within your Digital Campus and directly via email.
You will also be paired with a student success advisor who will meet with you regularly to help you track your degree progress, anticipate scheduling challenges and balance financial, professional and personal priorities.
Throughout your programme, you will have access to 24/7 tech support to ensure you have uninterrupted access to your courses, assignments and online campus features.
A flexible learning schedule
LSE believes in a rigorous approach to your education and ensures you obtain the knowledge and skills required to excel in your field of study. The online EMFSS programmes are designed with flexibility in mind, allowing you to manage your schedule in a way that enables you to learn alongside other personal and professional commitments. However, studying for a degree requires a significant level of commitment and motivation. As a guide, you should dedicate at least 25-30 hours per week to your studies if you intend to complete the maximum of four full courses in any one year.
Assessment and examinations
You are assessed by unseen written examinations. For some courses a project/coursework also counts towards your assessment. Examinations are set and marked by our academics to ensure your work is assessed to the same standard as London-based students at LSE. Examinations are held at local centres in over 180 countries worldwide every year, so you will be able to take examinations at a time and location that suits you.
