Programme design

Academic direction by LSE

LSE is a member institution of the University of London and provides the academic direction for the EMFSS programmes. This means that LSE:

  • Determines the programme curriculum
  • Plans the course structure and content
  • Develops and writes the study materials
  • Sets examination papers and marks examination scripts

As an Online Taught EMFSS student, you’ll get access to course materials specifically designed for online learning by LSE academics at the forefront of teaching and research. Your study materials will guide you through your learning and expose you to the thought leadership for which LSE is internationally renowned.

An LSE education

Understand the causes of things for the betterment of society.

Founded in 1895, LSE adopted the motto “rerum cognoscere causas”, which means to know the causes of things. The desire to bring academic expertise to bear on the problems of society is at the heart of LSE’s teaching philosophy and informs the design of all our programmes.

LSE develops the people and ideas that shape the world, and help students prepare for bright futures in world-changing roles. Studying an Online Taught EMFSS programme will encourage you to think critically and creatively and increase your understanding of how and why modern societies, institutions and economic systems function in the way they do.

LSE considers the University of London EMFSS programmes to be a key component of how we achieve our mission of making a positive difference to the world through bringing research-based knowledge to public problems.

LSE’s approach:

  • Research driven
  • Adopts a global perspective
  • Multidisciplinary
  • Fosters a problem solving attitude

Your Programme Directors

Your learning support

As part of your studies, you will be required to attend live online sessions led by your class teachers. During these fortnightly sessions, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss key concepts, clarify your learning for the fortnight, and interact with your class teachers and fellow classmates. You will also have the opportunity to engage with your class teacher via the course wall within your Digital Campus and directly via email.

You will also be paired with a student success advisor who will meet with you regularly to help you track your degree progress, anticipate scheduling challenges and balance financial, professional and personal priorities.

Throughout your programme, you will have access to 24/7 tech support to ensure you have uninterrupted access to your courses, assignments and online campus features.

A flexible learning schedule

LSE believes in a rigorous approach to your education and ensures you obtain the knowledge and skills required to excel in your field of study. The online EMFSS programmes are designed with flexibility in mind, allowing you to manage your schedule in a way that enables you to learn alongside other personal and professional commitments. However, studying for a degree requires a significant level of commitment and motivation. As a guide, you should dedicate at least 25-30 hours per week to your studies if you intend to complete the maximum of four full courses in any one year.

Assessment and examinations

You are assessed by unseen written examinations. For some courses a project/coursework also counts towards your assessment. Examinations are set and marked by our academics to ensure your work is assessed to the same standard as London-based students at LSE. Examinations are held at local centres in over 180 countries worldwide every year, so you will be able to take examinations at a time and location that suits you. View the full list of examination centres in the UK and overseas. Please see the University of London website for details regarding the examinations process.
