Assessment Feedback

Programme specifications contain information about the aims and outcomes of each degree programme. They describe the teaching, learning and assessment strategies in place to enable these outcomes to be achieved and demonstrated.

Assessment criteria for summative work is provided in all student handbooks.

• It is part of learning – providing you with ideas and information about how to improve your work.

• It is a joint responsibility – you need to be an active player, not a passive recipient!

• It is a dialogue – between you and all those other people you come across in your learning who help you develop and understand ideas.

• It helps you improve the particular assignment you are working on.

• It gives you useful pointers for subsequent work.

• It motivates you to reach your potential.

• It helps you understand the criteria that will be used to assess you in exams and coursework where the grade counts towards your degree result.

• Lecturers are available in their office hours to discuss coursework.

• Lecturers and class teachers are available in the Maths Support Centre for "drop-in" appointments.

• Class teachers are on hand to answer queries throughout the term and also hold office hours for this purpose.They can offer assistance with queries and give feedback on how you progress.

• Class teachers and Academic Advisers also give specific written feedback on LSE for You at the end of Michaelmas and Lent term.

• Submitting all your homework for marking is also an excellent way of ensuring you get regular feedback.

Feedback comes in many different forms in Mathematics:

• written comments on work you’ve handed in
• direct oral feedback from your class teacher
• group feedback from your lecturer
• informal feedback from discussion with fellow students and teachers
• online feedback
• script viewing opportunities (second year courses only)

The Mathematics Department uses a standardised scheme for grading classwork, so that the grades may be properly interpreted to provide regular feedback to students on their progress, throughout the academic year.

The grades are:

VG - Very Good

G - Good

S - Satisfactory

P - Poor

For undergraduate students: when work is not submitted, no grade will be assigned in LSE for You.

We stress that classwork grades reflect performance on a particular piece of work done in particular circumstances. They are intended to give students indicative feedback on their progress, but they do not necessarily predict performance in the final examination.
