In our Department we monitor, get feedback on, and improve our teaching by several means:
Staff Student Liaison Committees
These Departmental Committees meet twice a year and there is one for UG, one for MSc and one for Research students. All actions agreed at SSLCs are followed up and reported to SSLC members. Students can see who their SSLC representatives are by visiting the SSLC area of their programme Moodle site (Undergraduate, MSc, Research)
Surveys of class teaching
All course lecturers and teachers are surveyed toward the end of the teaching term and the results provided to the Head of Department.
Surveys at programme level
All progammes are surveyed toward the end of the teaching term and the results provided to the Head of Department.
Peer observation
The Department has a long-standing peer observation scheme by which all class teachers and lecturers are observed by a member of departmental faculty in an agreed cycle.
Teaching Committee
The Departmental Teaching Committee meets at least three times in each academic year and closely considers reports, course proposals, development initiatives and progress on all Departmental teaching-related matters.
Teaching Committee review of courses and programmes
Teaching Committee members, with other faculty, meet for specific in-depth course and programme review meetings or working groups as agreed by the Teaching Committee.
ASC reviews
The School Academic and Student Affairs Committee conducts reviews of Departments in an agreed cycle. The last ASC review of Department of Mathematics was in 2015. The ASC review now falls under the Education Committee.
