Methods Surgery

Term-time help with methods

Having trouble with methodology?

We are offering drop-in Methods Surgery sessions for staff, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research students. Those with any methods-related queries can attend for advice and guidance.

Each session will feature two members of staff, one with a background in quantitative methods and the other in qualitative methods, ready to answer your questions and give tailored advice.

These drop-in sessions will take place online via Zoom on Thursdays from 10:00 - 12:00 (UK time).

Book a slot and access the Zoom link on Moodle.

Be sure to read our Tips and Frequently Asked Questions below before signing up for Methods Surgery

Frequently Asked Questions

I have not received a confirmation of my booking after filling in the sign-up form.

You will not receive confirmation as these are ‘drop-in’ sessions and a specific time slot cannot be booked. By filling out the signup form, you are helping us monitor attendance and understand how LSE students and staff use the service.

I need help finding out whether there is availability on a certain date.

Methods Surgery works on a drop-in, first-come, first-served basis. We cannot guarantee that you will be seen, especially during busy periods such as term starts/ends, pre-exam, or dissertation/thesis submission periods.

Can I have out-of-term time help?

Unfortunately, our service only runs during term time, every Thursday from 10 am – 12 pm online via Zoom. For out-of-term time methods support, please get in touch with Eden Centre.

I am stuck in the waiting room waiting to be seen.

Please note that our sessions work on a drop-in, first-come, first-served basis. Once you click the Zoom link, you will enter a waiting room, and our specialists will admit you into the meeting when they can.

Is this a private 1:1 session, or will other people attend?

Methods Surgery is a 1:1 session where you will be able to talk to our methods specialist. However, you have a maximum of 15 minutes allocated.

I need more time to discuss my methods queries.

Should you find that you were not able to discuss your queries in length, please book office hours with our academics, see list here.

Tips for attending Methods Surgery

Please always access Methods Surgery via the link published on the Moodle page.

Our Zoom links are subject to regular updates. If you are accessing the meeting link via previous email communication with the department or through other platforms, the link might have expired.

Please avoid repeatedly entering and exiting the meeting so that you can be seen.

As you enter the meeting, you will be placed in a waiting room to join a virtual queue. Please wait patiently until you are admitted to the meeting. By exiting and re-joining the meeting, you will lose your spot.

Please be aware that each attendee is allocated a maximum of 15 minutes with our specialists.

Please keep your queries clear and concise and be considerate of other attendee’s time.

If you suspect an operational fault in the session or have any questions, please get in touch with the team by emailing
