LSE Graduation
LSE has outstanding student outcomes, according to the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2023, published by the Office for Students today (Thursday 28 September).
The TEF panel awarded LSE a Gold rating on the student outcomes aspect, which covers our approaches to student support, student completion rates, progression rates and educational gains. The School was given Silver for student experience, with an overall Silver rating. These results represent a significant improvement on the last Framework published in 2017.
The TEF panel making the award considered all the measures around undergraduate student outcomes at LSE to be of ‘outstanding’ quality, and that this applied to all student groups. Our Inclusive Education Action Plan and Inclusive Education Change Programme were noted as examples of understanding how to support student success, while the work of LSE Careers and LSE Welcome were also highlighted as highly effective.
On student experience measures, the panel gave weight to the impact of the Eden Centre and its leadership of academic professional development. They also applauded the range of student focused initiatives, centres and programmes aimed at improving the student experience including Change Makers, the Student Education Panel, LSE Life and LSE Welcome.
Developments at LSE
The School has made great strides since TEF 2017, prioritising education and student experience supported by a transformation of learning, teaching and assessment, and the development of a world-class campus. This is underpinned by our multimillion-pound investment in the ‘Educate for Global Impact’ change plan.
Notable developments since the last TEF include:
- The creation of the Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Framework to ensure the mental health and wellbeing of our community remains a top priority. Supported by substantial investment, this continues to be developed with community input and expertise, and extensive student feedback.
- Significant campus improvement, including the opening of the Marshall Building in 2022, which houses a state-of-the-art sports centre, gym, music practice rooms, café, as well as academic departments. Opening in 2026, the Firoz Lalji Global Hub, located at 35 Lincoln's Inn Fields, will be LSE's first net zero carbon building.
- The introduction of Change Makers, an engaging and collaborative programme between LSE and the LSE Students’ Union which gives students the chance to make meaningful change at LSE through independent research.
- The establishment of the Eden Centre as a developmental centre of education expertise with a clear focus on academic staff development, curriculum enrichment and digital innovation.
- The establishment and growth of LSE Generate, the School’s home for entrepreneurship, supporting LSE students and alumni building businesses. The centre recently won the Entrepreneurship and Innovation team of the year at the Triple E awards in Barcelona and were behind LSE winning Outstanding Entrepreneurial University at the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards last autumn.
Commenting on the TEF results, LSE Vice Chancellor and President (Interim), Professor Eric Neumayer, said:
“These positive results are the consequence of years of investment and dedication from staff across LSE. We are particularly pleased to receive a gold assessment on student outcomes, with many of our measures, activities and services deemed to be outstanding and high quality.
“While the TEF is one of many indicators we use to benchmark our educational provision, it is useful in showing what is working well and highlighting areas for further improvement.
“We are committed to ensuring our effective practices in teaching and learning are embedded across the whole School, reaching all of our students.”
