About me

Annette Bauer is Assistant Professorial Research Fellow in the Care Policy and Evaluation Centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Her research is driven by a desire to develop and apply methodologies that can produce evidence and knowledge useful to those making or informing decisions about how resources are spent, and services and support provided to improve population wellbeing.

Her expertise is the economic evaluation and analysis of complex, prevention-focused mental health and social care policies, programmes and interventions, that seek to address underlying social determinists and inequalities. This includes the use of theory-driven approaches, mixed-methods, and economic modelling, drawing on realist synthesis, complex system thinking, and implementation science.

She has led several economic research projects in the perinatal mental health area over the last 10 years in the UK and in low- and middle-income countries, some of which had major impact on change in policy, research, and practice.
Annette’s utilises participatory methods in many of her research projects, applying a system approach to the promotion and generation of economic evidence, in areas concerning vulnerable populations and in systems with limited capacity and capabilities to generate or use economic evidence.

In the past, Annette worked part-time as economist for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, leading the economic work for six social care guidelines. She has since then conducted research reflecting on the role of economic evidence in guidance development in social care. She leads research to understand the processes by which social care guidance is implemented in England and Wales, and potential costs incurred, and value generated from implementation.

Her work has been published in high impact academic journals, such as Lancet Psychiatry, Journal of Affective Disorder and Psychological Medicine, and presents at national and international conferences and events.
