To coincide with the visit of Professor Miranda Stewart to the LSE, the Department of Law is delighted to announce a special LSE Taxation Seminar on Tuesday 11 February 2020 entitled, 'Still Unequal: Gender, Tax and Welfare in Australia'.
From the bottom to the top of the tax and welfare system, women are still unequal. This talk explores how these policy fields interact in a way that continues to disadvantage women. Drawing on tax data analysis and tax-transfer system modelling, it shows how the interaction of tax, welfare, market and family perpetuates gender inequality – and how gender inequality contributes to broader income and wealth inequalities in Australia. Finally, it asks what can be done systemically to empower women economically and improve economic and social outcomes for Australia.
To examine these isssues further, Miranda will be joined by two guest speakers: Tasneem Kadiri, the UK and Ireland Tax Director at L’Oréal and Fran Bennett from the University of Oxford and Women’s Budget Group.
About the speakers
Miranda Stewart is Professor and Director of Tax at Melbourne University Law School and a Fellow at the Tax and Transfer Policy Institute (TTPI) at the Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University. Miranda was the inaugural Director of TTPI from 2014 to 2017. Miranda researches, teaches and consults on a wide range of tax law, policy and budget topics, including gender equality impacts in Australia and globally. She recently edited the book Tax, Social Policy and Gender and Tax, Law and Development (2017, ANU Press). Miranda is a frequent public and media commentator on tax and budgeting and was named as one of the AFR’s 100 Women of Influence in 2018.
About the speaker

Fran Bennett is a Senior Research and Teaching Fellow at the University of Oxford, where she researches social security policy, gender issues, and poverty. She is also an independent consultant, and has written extensively on social policy issues in that capacity. In the past she worked for the Child Poverty Action Group, and Oxfam, amongst others. She maintains active links with a number of NGOs, and in particular is on the policy advisory group of the Women's Budget Group (which conducts gender analysis of government Budgets and policies).
Tasneem Kadiri is the UK and Ireland tax director at L’Oréal where she is responsible for both direct and indirect taxes. She has almost 20 years’ experience in tax and audit and accountancy, having worked in both practice and industry. She is on the committee for ICAEW Large Business and International Tax Committee, the Committee for Women in Tax and leads the BAME best practice group for the Multicultural Professional Network Forum (House of Lords).
