The setting up of the National Law School in Bangalore in the late 1980s was a remarkably unself-conscious experiment in educating a new breed of 'social engineers’ and an institution that billed itself 'Harvard of the East'.
This event marks the publication of 'An Idea of a Law School: Ideas from The Law School' (Edited by Dr Madhava Menon, Murali Neelakantan and Sumeet Malik, Eastern Book Company (EBC), Lucknow ) - a volume which examines the scope and impact of a catalytic revolution in legal education in India marked by the establishment of the 'law school’ by Dr NR Madhava Menon.
The remarkable successes achieved by its alumni in a relatively short period of time speaks to an experiment that has worked in most part. What are the components of this success, what can we take from this model of education, and are there any lessons for the way law is imagined, researched, taught and practised everywhere?
Prominent NLS alumni and authors will speak of their experience and ideas for the future of legal education including showcasing particular strands of legal scholarship. The final essay in the volume is written by Prof Shamnad Basheer.
This is a free seminar for LSE staff, students and alumni. Seating is limited so please register online via EventBrite to secure your place today. Contact: law.events@lse.ac.uk for more information.
