Dr Siva Thambisetty was quoted in the Financial Times (9 July 2019) on a proposal by the US Senate’s committee on intellectual property to change patent eligibility rules. Dr Thambsietty noted that current legal disagreements on patent eligibility are not necessarily a bad thing; by definition only cases that test existing rules are going to be litigated. This is particularly true of emerging technologies that often raise the most acute eligibility questions. On the proposals which are directed towards a more permissive approach to patents, Dr Thambisetty says 'More patents do not necessarily equate to more innovation, so it is difficult to see what problem is solved by allowing more patents to be granted.'
