Dr Jan Zglinski has written an article analysing the failure of the planned European Super League, published on EU Law Live (23/04/21). In the article, Dr Zglinski argues that UEFA’s attempts to stop the breakaway clubs, by banning them and their players from all official competitions, would have raised issues of EU competition law. The recent crisis demonstrates that football is in dire need of reform. The biggest risk in its aftermath might be complacency: the feeling that by having successfully fended off the Super League, football is back in a good place.
