Sarah Wildi

Master of Public Administration (MPA) Class of 2023.

I chose LSE’s MPA program because my number one priority in pursuing a Master’s was to develop my quantitative skills and LSE is the best place to learn economics and econometrics.

Sarah Wildi_SQNationality: Swiss

Job title: Communications Consultant

Organisation: World Bank Group

Could you tell us about your background and what drew you to the LSE MPA?

I pursued a Bachelor of Arts at the George Washington University, in Washington D.C. where I double majored in International Affairs and Political Science. After graduating I worked at the World Bank Group in corporate communications. In my role I learned that communications can be, and is in many ways, a policy tool in itself, but it cannot substitute strong economic and social policies. As a result of that experience, I realized that I wanted to become more directly involved in creating public policy, instead of merely communicating about it, which is why I chose to do a Master’s in Public Administration.

Why did you choose the MPA over other competitor schools and programmes?

I chose LSE’s MPA program because my number one priority in pursuing a Master’s was to develop my quantitative skills and LSE is the best place to learn economics and econometrics. I also was drawn to the program’s practical component through the Capstone. I liked the fact that the program was not only academic, but that I would also have the opportunity to apply what I learned.

What are you most looking forward to in your second year?

I’m looking forward to doing the Capstone Project and taking some more economics-focused courses. I’m also really looking forward to being reunited with my classmates!

Where/what are your favourite places and things to do in London?

Going to the restaurant – there are so many great food options from all around the world. I also love all the markets (Portobello Road Market, Columbia Road Flower Market, Borough Market, Camden Market, etc.) as well as the parks.

What advice would you give to students who are preparing to move to London?

If you’re looking for an apartment, start you search early. And make a list of things you want to do/see in London – it will help you get excited about the move!

How do you make the most of being a #partoflse?

I try to go to the events organized not only by the SPP, but LSE more broadly. There are so many interesting speakers that come to LSE daily!

What general advice would you give to prospective and incoming students?

If you have any questions, reach out to the SPP community, everyone is so welcoming and willing to help in whatever way they can. And don’t worry if you don’t have a strong background in economics/quant. I didn’t either. You won’t be the only one in that situation and you’ll learn along the way through the two-week preparatory course, the courses themselves, the Teaching Assistants as well as also from your classmates.

How would you describe your SPP experience in three words?

Intellectually Stimulating, Rewarding, Fun
