LSE/SciencesPo Double Degree: Master of Public Administration

Open for 2025 entry. Application deadline 9 February 2025. Apply via Sciences Po admissions.

The double MPP-MPA degree offers students a multi-disciplinary and applied public policy education that harnesses the best of two world-leading social science institutions.

The double Master’s degree in Public Policy and Public Administration between Sciences Po’s School of Public Affairs and the LSE School of Public Policy aims to equip students with a rounded, multi-disciplinary and applied public policy education that harnesses the best of two world-leading social science institutions

In particular, the first year of the programme at Sciences Po provides students with core skills in economics and politics as well as courses that enable students to complete the requirements of one of eleven policy streams in the area that they choose to specialize in (in English or in French).  Students explore the intersection between public policy and cutting-edge technologies, with an emphasis on a hands-on, concrete approach.

During the second year at LSE, the programme complements this learning with the institutional strengths of the LSE School of Public Policy. Students have the opportunity to select a second area of specialism – either complementary or distinct from – that chosen in the first year.

The programme further supplements students’ professional experience through a second year capstone project in which students will work in teams to solve a real-world policy problem.

Key features:

  • Study at two prestigious institutions in two cities – Year one at the School of Public Affairs at Sciences Po in Paris and Year two at the School of Public Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science
  • Choice of specialisms - a broad curriculum allows you to identify your key interests and strengths and choose a specialisation from a range of electives in both your first and second year of study.
  • The ‘Public Policy Incubator’ (Year 1) – put your skills into practice and work in groups alongside researchers, representatives from public, private and civil society organisations to propose innovative, practicable solutions to an identified policy challenge.
  • MPA Capstone (Year 2) - an opportunity to work on a real-world policy challenge as part of a six-month consultancy style project with an external client.
  • A global outlook – be a part of the international communities at LSE and Sciences Po as well a network of prestigious policy schools around the world as part of the Global Public Policy Network (GPPN).

Sciences Po - Year One

The first year of the programme at Sciences Po provides students with core skills in economics and politics as well as courses that enable students to complete the requirements of one of eleven policy streams in the area that they choose to specialize in (in English or in French).  Students explore the intersection between public policy and cutting-edge technologies, with an emphasis on a hands-on, concrete approach.

London School of Economics and Political Science - Year Two

The key features of the second year are the MPA Capstone and the option to choose a specialisation to be a part of your degree title.

You will also choose a range of option courses (electives) from the School of Public Policy (or elsewhere in LSE, subject to permission and availability).

The MPA Capstone

The MPA Capstone is a compulsory one unit course. You will carry out analysis and research, as part of a team, in order to address a practical policy issue relevant to a real-life client organisation. It allows you to extend your capabilities by applying what you have learned in the MPA core courses in a professional context.

Option courses (electives)

Your remaining second year course units will be made up of option courses (electives) from a wide range available in the School of Public Policy or (with permission and subject to availability) from elsewhere in LSE.

For the most up-to-date list of optional courses please visit the relevant LSE School Calendar page

You must note, however, that while care has been taken to ensure that this information is up to date and correct, a change of circumstances since publication may cause the School to change, suspend or withdraw a course or programme of study, or change the fees that apply to it. The School will always notify the affected parties as early as practicably possible and propose any viable and relevant alternative options. Note that the School will neither be liable for information that after publication becomes inaccurate or irrelevant, nor for changing, suspending or withdrawing a course or programme of study due to events outside of its control, which includes but is not limited to a lack of demand for a course or programme of study, industrial action, fire, flood or other environmental or physical damage to premises.
You must also note that places are limited on some courses and/or subject to specific entry requirements. The School cannot therefore guarantee you a place. Please note that changes to programmes and courses can sometimes occur after you have accepted your offer of a place. These changes are normally made in light of developments in the discipline or path-breaking research, or on the basis of student feedback. Changes can take the form of altered course content, teaching formats or assessment modes. Any such changes are intended to enhance the student learning experience. You should visit the School’s Calendar, or contact the relevant academic department, for information on the availability and/or content of courses and programmes of study. Certain substantive changes will be listed on the updated graduate course and programme information page.

Class profile

Our LSE SPP degree programmes attract a highly diverse range of students from all over the globe. In 2022 we welcomed students representing 50+ nationalities.

The LSE SPP offers three MPA double degree programmes with partner schools, Columbia SIPA, Toronto University and Sciences Po. Our MPA double degrees are a special cohort of approx 15 students per partner school programme. They benefit from belonging to a smaller cohort whilst also learning alongside our larger MPA cohort of approx 75-100 students.

There is no formal work experience requirement, however our students have a wide range of prior experience. Our MPA students have an average of 3.5 years' working experience.

We welcome students from wide-ranging areas of expertise including economics, law, social sciences, political science, business and international relations.

Their combined experience encourages a reflective approach to study that draws on skills and experience gained prior to the programme. This diversity is a major strength, providing many different national, economic and societal perspectives to problems and solutions of public policy.
