Course Spotlight - EC102: Introductory Macroeconomics

We sat down with Omar who took the course EC102: Introductory Macroeconomics in 2023, to find out what he learnt whilst at LSE and the highlights of his course. 

 

Why did you decide to attend LSE Summer School?

I attended LSE Summer School because my sisters took previous courses a few summers ago. They enjoyed the experience so much, learned a lot, and made many friends, so I decided to try the experience for myself.

Why did you choose EC102?

I chose EC102 because I think economics is highly important in education, regardless of your degree. In my degree, they do not offer a course in macro or microeconomics unless it's an elective. Therefore, I decided to learn new things that my home university could not offer.

Tell us about an average day as a student on EC102.

I started my day by going for a morning run around London to exercise and do some sightseeing – my favourite spots are Buckingham Palace and Big Ben. Afterwards, I took a shower, followed by a home-cooked breakfast. After breakfast, I headed to the closest Pret (a London coffee shop brand) to get some coffee. After this, I walked to LSE’s campus for my class. Here, we worked through some exercises and reviewed content from the lecture. When my seminar was done, I headed out with some friends to get something to eat. We enjoyed Wagamama’s because it was close to LSE, and I they make great ramen. Afterwards, we returned to LSE for our afternoon lecture from 14:00 - 17:00. When the lecture finished, we had a lot of time to do homework, study, go out for dinner, and hang out with friends.

What was your favourite part of EC102?

My favourite part of EC102 was learning new things while meeting new people. I met people from around the world, and it was really fun to study with all of them and exchange ideas.

What advice would you give to students considering EC102?

Don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. You will have social and educational challenges, but you won't be able to overcome them if you don't face them. Don't overthink and have the best time ever!

What are your short-term professional goals, and how does EC102 contribute to these goals?

I want to start an internship at a private equity firm, and in order to achieve this, I need further knowledge in economics. By obtaining a certificate from LSE Summer School and obtaining the knowledge from EC102, I have a pretty good chance of working in this sector.

What would be your top tip for future Summer School students?

Meet as many people as you can, and do not hold yourself back. Create experiences and memories while learning different topics.

How did you find the course and teaching experience at LSE?

Top tier. The lectures were fun and really educational. The seminars were amazing, and I always felt comfortable asking the teachers for help if I had a question or didn't understand.

Was meeting and talking to other students on your course easy?

Yes. Everyone was so friendly and open to meeting new people. Of course, LSE made it easier by organising social events where you could chat to other Summer School students, plus in seminars we were put into groups, so that was another opportunity to meet people.
