We sat down with Qingxiang Song, who took MG101: Marketing, to hear about her experience of the course, including the teaching, content and her highlights.

Why did you decide to attend LSE Summer School?

I wanted to attend LSE Summer School for two reasons. Firstly, being a business student, I was really interested in LSE's outstanding marketing programme. I wanted to experience international academic learning and enhance my expertise in the field.

Secondly, as an adventurous individual, I believed that embarking on this journey would be an incredible experience, as I had never been to London or LSE before.

Why did you choose MG101?

Firstly, marketing is a core component of the academic curriculum of my business degree. I decided to take the course to add to my knowledge, and due to my genuine interest in the field of marketing.

I’d like to forge a career path in marketing, so I took MG101 in hopes of honing my professional skills, and building a solid foundation for my subsequent career development.

Tell us about an average day as a student on MG101.

An average day as an MG101 student typically involves a class and a lecture.

In the morning, we engaged in small-group case analysis sessions, called seminars, where we discussed and resolved case study problems, using knowledge from our pre-class reading. The afternoons were dedicated to in-depth learning of marketing concepts and skills through lectures. The professors were highly knowledgeable and approachable, delivering the content in an engaging manner.

Throughout the day, we absorbed a substantial amount of information, thanks to the combination of interactive case discussions and the articulate presentation of marketing knowledge by the instructors.

What was your favourite part of MG101?

My favourite part of MG101 was the afternoon sessions dedicated to specialised course content. Aside from the absorbing and rich content, I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to seek clarification on any classroom uncertainties during breaks or after class. Our teacher was incredibly patient in addressing my queries, allowing me to truly grasp the essence of these key concepts. This interactive and supportive learning environment enhanced my understanding and appreciation of the course material.

What advice would you give to students considering MG101?

Firstly, I would advise students to read the course material before class and bring a tablet or laptop to facilitate note-taking during lectures.

Secondly, I encourage them to fully embrace the learning journey in the classroom. The teachers and fellow students are exceptionally supportive, so make the most of the opportunities to exchange ideas and cherish these moments of interaction. Enjoy the experience!

What are your short-term professional goals, and how does MG101 contribute to these goals?

My short-term professional goal is to strengthen my expertise in marketing. It's no exaggeration to say that MG101 has equipped me with a solid foundation in the subject. I can now comprehend and adeptly apply various marketing theories to analyse business cases. Moreover, I've developed the initiative to critically evaluate recent business news, significantly enhancing my logical reasoning skills. The course has been instrumental in honing my marketing knowledge and analytical abilities, directly contributing to my short-term goal of becoming more proficient in the field.

Was meeting and talking to other students on your course easy?

It was quite easy. Despite English not being my native language, I was accustomed to studying in an all-English environment at my home institution. During my time at LSE, fellow students were friendly and welcoming, making it easy for me to adapt. Their warmth and enthusiasm facilitated smooth communication, allowing me to engage easily in conversations with them.

What would be your top tip for future Summer School students?

Make sure to always carry an umbrella or wear a waterproof jacket! London weather is incredibly unpredictable, and sudden rain showers are quite common. It's a practical tip to stay prepared for unexpected weather changes during your time at the Summer School.
