Dear Future LSE Summer School Explorer,

As I sit down to pen this article, I can't help but reflect on the incredible journey that was my LSE Summer School experience. Let me tell you, it wasn't just a programme; it was a life-changing odyssey that left an indelible mark on my heart and mind.

From the first day of classes to the final adieu, every moment felt like a whirlwind of discovery and growth. The classroom discussions weren't just about absorbing information; they were about challenging perspectives, fostering collaboration, and igniting a passion for learning that I didn't know existed within me.

As you prepare for this enriching experience, I hope this comprehensive survival guide will equip you with everything you need to navigate the academic challenges, embrace the cultural diversity, and savour the best local flavours!

I was lucky to be a part of MG106: Strategic Management, something very different from what I was pursuing at university in India. While the lectures and classes were intense, engaging with top-notch professors and like-minded students from around the globe is at the heart of the LSE experience.

Academic Triumphs - strategies for acing those classes!
  • Mastering the schedule: Summer School is intense, with courses condensed into a few weeks. I remember on our very first day at the Welcome Reception, the dean said “these courses are literally an entire year’s experience in 20 days!”. What helped me stay up to date was creating a daily schedule to stay organised, allocating dedicated study time, and ensuring I made the most of my academic opportunity! You'll get your timetable on the first day, so organising your day around the classes is never a problem.
  • Engage with professors: your class professors are there to help. Drop by their office hours to discuss coursework, seek clarification, or just to have a friendly chat. They're a wealth of knowledge beyond the syllabus.
  • Utilise resources: LSE's library and academic support services are invaluable. The library was one of my favourite spots on campus - not just to study and get resources but also to sit in and absorb the atmosphere!
  • Create a study squad: form study groups to tackle assignments together. It's a fantastic way to share ideas, gain insights, and lighten the academic load. I’m still in touch with my “study trio” and we absolutely love reminiscing about our study sessions!
  • Networking opportunities: Connect with your peers! One of the major advantages of Summer School is that it brings in students from around the globe. The friendships you form can offer diverse perspectives and enhance your understanding of the coursework. You may meet people who offer you ideas and opportunities you’ve never even heard of!
Navigating London's Cultural Tapestry
  • Explore London's icons, cultural events and festivals: Plan weekend excursions to immerse yourself in the rich history and culture that London has to offer. Check out local festivals, concerts, and exhibitions. Use your LSE student ID to get discounts! Register for the West End theatre trips offered by LSE- you will be able to have the best tickets at cheap prices!
  • Public transportation mastery: familiarise yourself with the Tube, buses, and the trains. Plan your routes in advance to make the most of your time and budget – you can download the Citymapper app to help you figure out the best routes! Also if you love walking, then you’re in the perfect city.
  • Embrace diversity: London is a melting pot of cultures. Explore neighbourhoods like Soho, Chinatown, and Brick Lane for a taste of the city's diversity. Attend cultural events and try international cuisines to fully appreciate the cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Safety and Practical Tips
  • Weather preparedness: London weather can be unpredictable. Pack layers, a sturdy umbrella (always carry an umbrella, even if it’s sunny!), and comfortable shoes for exploring the city on foot.
  • Oyster card magic: invest in an Oyster card for easy and cost-effective travel on London's public transportation system. It's the key to unlocking the city's many wonders.
  • Embrace the Tube: the London Underground, known as the Tube, is the lifeline of the city. Learn the routes and you'll be zipping around the city like a seasoned Londoner in no time.

As I bid farewell to my LSE Summer School chapter, I carry with me not just academic knowledge but a profound sense of self-discovery and a network of friendships that span the globe. This was more than an educational stint; it was a transformative experience that widened my horizons, deepened my understanding of the world, and left me with memories that will last a lifetime.

So, dear future explorer, buckle up for the ride of a lifetime. Embrace every class, savour every cultural encounter, relish every bite, and navigate the city with open eyes and an open heart. Your LSE Summer School journey awaits, and trust me, it's going to be nothing short of extraordinary. Wishing you an adventure as magical as mine!
