Your learning experience

Academic direction by LSE

The material that we got from the LSEā€¦ I don't think we could have found that kind of direction elsewhere. We had a virtual learning environment, moderated discussion forums, and we could post our problems and receive replies from people who knew what they were talking about.

Studying a University of London qualification through a Recognised Teaching Centre allows you become a member of an elite network of global academic excellence, while benefiting from the rich in-person learning experience unique to each teaching centre.

Along with the immense value of a global network of like-minded peers, wherever you choose to study, all Economics, Management, Finance and Social Science (EMFSS) students will benefit from:

The LSE vision to understand the causes of things

Founded in 1895 for the "betterment of society", LSE adopted the motto “rerum cognoscere causas”, which means to know the causes of things. The desire to bring academic expertise to bear on the problems of society is at the heart of LSE’s teaching philosophy and informs the design of our EMFSS programmes.

Studying with us will encourage you to think critically and creatively and increase your understanding of how and why modern societies, institutions and economic systems function in the way they do.

LSE considers these programmes to be a key component of how we achieve our mission of making a positive difference to the world through bringing research-based knowledge to public problems. Based on undergraduate degrees taught at LSE, EMFSS programmes have also been developed to shape the future leaders and thinkers who will help solve tomorrow’s unknown challenges.

LSE’s approach to EMFSS Programmes:

  • Research driven
  • Adopts a global perspective
  • Multi-disciplinary
  • Fosters a problem-solving attitude

Study materials

Along with the academic instruction provided by your local teaching centre our specially-written study materials, developed by LSE academics, guide you through your course content and give you access to the thought leadership for which LSE is internationally renowned.

Your study materials are available for you to access in your Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Depending on the course, your study materials are likely to include digital or downloadable course notes, videos, discussion forums, formative assessments, course work, study skills, past examination papers and examiners’ commentaries.

Examinations

During your EMFSS programme you will be assessed by written examinations. For some courses a project or coursework also counts towards your assessment.

Examinations are set and marked by our academics to ensure your work is assessed to the same standard as London-based students at LSE.

Examinations are held at local centres in over 180 countries worldwide every year. Take a look at the full list of examination centres in the UK and overseas

Please see the University of London Programmes website for details regarding the examinations process.

Reference access to the LSE Library and Senate House

EMFSS students are always welcome in London. Registered students have free-of-charge access to the main LSE Library as well as the University of London’s Senate House Library on a reference basis.

Meet your Academic Leadership Team

Although the study experience will be locally relevant through its delivery by your teaching centre, EMFSS programmes are designed and developed by LSE academics and are assessed to the same academic standards as LSE on-campus degrees.
