About me

My position at LSE involves Co-ordinating Mandarin, Japanese and Korean provision. I am also Programme Director of our BSc International Relations and Chinese and UK Director of LSE Confucius Institute for Business London.

Currently, I am researching the implications of e-learning in foreign language teaching and learning. I am also interested in material development for teaching Mandarin as a foreign language. I am the author of 'Mastering Chinese' for complete beginners of Mandarin which outlines a communicative and cultural approach.

In addition to my roles at LSE I am an executive member of the British Chinese Language Teaching Society, a school governor and a chief examiner at the Charted Institute of Linguists.

Expertise Details

My PhD research looks into speech acts exploring the linguistic and cultural differences in apology strategies used in UK and China covering intercutural and inter-language pragmatics with a comparative perspective

About the Language Centre

LSE is a centre for the study of the social sciences and this is reflected in its Language Centre.

Our courses focus on language and society, encouraging you to learn how to use language in the contexts you would like to live, study and work in. We teach people to speak languages, but also teach about language (socio-linguistics and intercultural communication) and offer a range of courses on literature and society.

We offer English for Academic Purposes programmes, BSc programmes a range of undergraduate degree courses that can be taken as part of a degree and a range of language options that can be taken outside of a degree programme. All programmes and courses relate language study and support to the fields of interest of social science students.
