Student Life in Sociology

How do we enhance your student experience?

Throughout the year we hold a variety of academic and social events for our student community, from photography competitions to Christmas parties!

We want your time at LSE Sociology to be the best it can be!

Welcome Receptions

Start your time in the department the right way by attending either our Undergraduate or Postgraduate Welcome Receptions. This is a great opportunity for you to meet students on your programme and the staff who will be teaching you.

Christmas Party

In December, we hold our undergraduate and postgraduate Christmas party. This is a great chance for you to mingle with fellow students and staff over mince pies and mulled wine.

Common Rooms

We have two student common rooms in the Department, with dedicated space for our student community! We have a MSc student common room and a UG student common room where you can meet or study with friends in the department, equipped with sofas and bean bags. The common room is open Monday to Friday during term time.

Public Events

We host a range of events across topics relating to Sociology. They often involve a member of academic staff from the Department, and host guest speakers. Unless otherwise stated, our events are free and open to all. You can see our forthcoming events here.

Careers Events

We run a number of careers events throughout the year in partnership with LSE Careers. We have a dedicated careers consultant working with the Department and these events are a great opportunity for students to network with recent alumni and professionals from a range of sectors.

Social Representatives

We work with Social Representatives to consult on the activities their programme would like to run. Social Representatives ensure activities are varied and accessible and they support any students who propose events in running them. Social Representatives are a key pillar of department student engagement and are responsible for providing organised support for student social activities.

Student Representatives

We work with Student Academic Representatives who sit on the Student Staff Liaison Committees (SSLC) to ensure that your voices are heard, and that we act on your feedback as much as we can. The role of a Student Academic Representative is central to ensuring that courses and programmes at LSE work effectively.

Being a rep is a great opportunity to feedback on behalf of your colleagues and play a vital role in helping the Department shape its practice and provision to the benefit of both the current cohort and future cohorts!

Newsletter

Sociology Student News is our weekly newsletter designed to let our students know of all the upcoming events and recent news throughout the school and our department! The newsletter is a great way of staying informed of things going on around LSE and we invite our students to send in contributions for any surveys or activities they have organised!

Photo Competitions

Every year we run a photo competition for our offer holders, this year's theme is "Destination LSE Sociology". You can see the 2020 winners here.

We also run photo competitions for students. Our most recent competition was on the theme of "Researching Sociology". See the winning entries here.
