Marwa Baabbad is a Yemeni researcher with a specific interest in the current conflict in Yemen and the security sector. She has previously worked as a development professional with Saferworld in Yemen. During that time, she led on gender, peace and security and youth projects in Yemen, Egypt, Libya and Syria neighbouring countries. Marwa was also a member of the Youth Consultative Group for the UNDP’s 2016 Arab Human Development Report.
While at the LSE Centre for Women, Peace and Security, Marwa’s research will focus on women's roles in both conflict and peacebuilding within communities in Yemen. Although women were not previously engaging as active combatants in the current conflict, there have been recent reports suggesting low-scale active engagement. Her research will also look into potential roles women can play in future Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) processes in the country.
Marwa has recently attained a master’s degree in Post-war Recovery Studies from the University of York as a Chevening scholar. Her research focused on “‘National Dialogue’ as a roadmap for sustainable peace: exploring Yemen’s 2013 National Dialogue Conference’’.
