While it’s important to focus on your studies, we encourage you to make the most of your time here and take advantage of the services available to you.

This section highlights the careers programme tailored specifically to International History students. Beyond the sessions listed below, we’ve got a lot to offer you, including one-to-one careers discussions, careers events, opportunities to meet employers, careers information and the Volunteer Centre.

A short session, open to IH undergraduate students (3-3.30pm) and postgraduate students (3.30-4pm), aimed at introducing all useful features and services on LSE Careers' website and on CareerHub. Come and see how to make the most of careers services.

18 October 2021 - Get the Most Out of Your time at LSE - for 1st and 2nd-year UGs

Talk to peers, get experience and make the most out of your time at LSE.

Designed with first and second year undergraduate International History students in mind, this seminar will give suggestions for activities and experiences you could become engaged in whilst at LSE to help develop your experience and CV.

There will be a focus on how work experience, internships, part-time jobs, volunteering, clubs and societies and other activities can make you more employable to employers.

We will hear from IH students in their 2nd or 3rd year coming along to share their experience and tips with you.

Unsure of your career options and how to think about your career plan and job search? Come along to this session open to all IH students to ask all your questions and explore your options and how best to build a career strategy.

Explore potential career destinations, look at how you might develop a career strategy, and market yourself in your applications and via networking. You will have the opportunity to pose all your questions to careers consultant Edith Karinthi-Durnez.

Panellists include:

Alex Selway - COVID-19 Strategy Lead, UK Civil Service
Alex currently works for the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) as COVID-19 Strategy Lead for BEIS’s COVID-19 Programme, which coordinates cross-cutting COVID policy development across BEIS, including support measures and Working Safely guidance for businesses. His previous roles within the UK Civil Service involved work on energy resilience and EU Exit. Prior to joining the UK Civil Service, Alex worked as a Policy Advisor to the elected Mayor of Bristol.
Alex graduated from the LSE with a BSc in International Relations & History. While studying at the LSE, Alex was the elected President of Raising and Giving (RAG) and worked extensively with local charities to support student fundraising and volunteering. He began his work in the public sector as an intern for Bristol City Council during his studies.

Catherine Flood - Public Policy Associate at Ofcom
Catherine Flood is a Public Policy Associate at Ofcom working on the Online Safety Bill as it progresses through Parliament. Before joining Ofcom in April 2021, Catherine worked in the Public Affairs team at J Sainsbury’s plc; projects she worked on included Brexit, the proposed Sainsbury’s/Asda merger, and liaising with government during the Covid-19 pandemic. She also has experience working in the parliamentary office of a former Cabinet Minister.
Catherine studied English and History at the University of Southampton and completed a masters degree in International History at the LSE in 2017.

Sofia Shehana Basheer - Climate Change Policy Analyst at InfluenceMap
Sofia graduated in 2021 from the LSE-Columbia dual degree in International and World History. Her broad interests include research and policy analysis. At her current role as a Climate Policy Analyst at the non-profit think tank InfluenceMap, she researches how corporate lobbying by fossil fuel companies influences climate policy. Previously, she has interned at the Brookings Institution and the Government of India, focusing on foreign policy.

15 February 2022 - Thinking of doing a PhD in International History

Considering whether a PhD is right for you? In this session we'll look at motivations, good and bad reasons to do it, as well as how to apply, to help guide your decision-making process.

This panel event is for any International History postgraduate student considering doing a PhD. It explores why, where and when to do a PhD and also how to approach the application process, over lunch and drinks!

The panel includes Dr Tanya Harmer, PhD Programme Director, current PhD students, and a Careers Consultant.

This event will be particularly useful if you:

  • are thinking about a career in NGOs and charities
  • would like to hear about the sort of work and responsibilities jobs in this area can entail.
  • would like to get advice for your job search

  • describe the key functions and the day-to-day work of the alumni
  • evaluate some of the realities of careers in this sector.
  • state strategies to get started in similar lines of work, based on the alumni insights

Clara Lopez Prunonosa - Management Accountant at the British MuseumI graduated from the LSE in 2013, having done BSc International Relations & History. After taking a gap year to work for an NGO in Costa Rica, I worked for EY, where I did a training contract to become a Chartered Accountant. After three exciting but exhausting years in the city, I decided to follow my passion for the Arts & Heritage sector, while re-purposing my accounting skills. I began working for the British Museum in 2018, where I am currently a Management Accountant.

Darren Barker - Founder and Director of Barker LanghamDarren is a Founder of Barker Langham (alongside co-Founder Eric Langham), and leads the company’s work across its strategic, operational, business, analytics, cultural and master planning portfolio. He is a globally experienced and leading cultural and business planner and has developed a diverse range of cultural schemes from museums and historic buildings to parks and landscapes – with work covering vision development, competition brief origination, options appraisals, masterplanning, commercial and operational planning. He is an appointed adviser to the UK Heritage Fund.The core of his work is planning holistically to ensure the future sustainability of culturally significant assets, places and their future economies. Recent projects include Oman Across Ages Museum, Museum of London West Smithfield, Qasr Al Hosn Fort and Cultural Foundation (Abu Dhabi), Weifang Cultural District (China), Chatsworth Estate, and the development of a brief for new urban park for St Petersburg (Russia).As part of the development of the company’s work, Darren is also a Director of Barker Langham Recruitment which recruits for key positions in the cultural sector globally, and he lead Barker Langham’s development of its cloud-based business planning tool for the sector – Barker Langham Analytics. Darren has been on the Blooloop Global Museum Influencers list for 2020 and 2021.

Juan David Cascavita - Historian, cultural heritage and archive professionalI hold a BA in History of the Colombian National University and an MSc in Economic History of the LSE. I worked at the Colombian National Archives as a Historian leading the process of organization and description of different archival funds of heritage documents according to International Standard ISAD-G and I also accompanied numerous public institutions in the process of archival transferences to the Colombian National Archives.
