About me

Yasmin Getirana holds a BSc in International Relations from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RIO) and a MSc in Social History from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Her master's thesis was prized as the best one defended in the Social History Department of UFRJ in 2023 and will be published later this year as a book. Written in Portuguese, it delves into the creation and functioning of the first professional association of domestic workers in Rio de Janeiro during Brazil's military dictatorship, as well as their struggle for recognition and labour rights. Her main topics of interest are Social Labour History, specially its relations to gender, race, religion and urban studies. She has also written and directed two short archival documentaries.

 PhD Title: "The organisation of women domestic workers through the Young Christian Workers movement in Brasil, Colombia and England (second half of the 20th Century"

For her PhD Yasmin will research organised female domestic workers in the transnational Catholic movement Young Christian Workers in Brazil, Colombia and England. Awarded an AHRC LAHP Studentship, she is supervised by Dr Anna Cant and co-supervised by Dr Tanya Harmer at the International History Department at LSE.
