This event marks the launch of a new book Harnessing Global Value Chains for Regional Development which makes the case for proactive public policies for the engagement with GVCs to the benefit of local communities. 

Global value chains (GVCs) have a central role in the international economy, yet to many they are unwieldy flows of goods and services unable to be harnessed. This event marks the launch of a new book which makes the case for GVC-sensitive development policies that target specific segments of selected GVCs as stepping-stones for local upgrading, innovation and development.

With a global geo-political landscape constantly in flux, policy makers the world over are looking to future-proof strategies for economic development. The re-organisation of global supply chains, emergence of new technologies and sustainability concerns offer new opportunities for countries, regions and cities to link up to Global Value Chains (GVCs) and participate in the global economy.

The speakers will discuss how this engagement can be operationalised on the ground and how barriers to inclusive and sustainable development can be removed to make GVC participation a stepping stone for local upgrading, innovation and development.

Meet our speakers and chair 

Peter Berkowitz is Policy Director, Directorate General for Regional and Urban Policy, European Commission.

Riccardo Crescenzi is co-author of Harnessing Global Value Chains for Regional Development and Professor of Economic Geography, LSE. 

Oliver Harman is co-author of Harnessing Global Value Chains for Regional Development and Cities Economist for the International Growth Centre’s (IGC) Cities.

Ana Novik is the Head of the Investment Division at the OECD.

Joaquim Oliveira Martins is Special Advisor to the EU Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms.

Vanessa Rubio-Márquez is Associate Dean for Extended Education, School of Public Policy, LSE.
