In a session chaired by Tony Travers, Clare Coghill, Nick Walkley and Jonathan Werran will be discussing the levelling up agenda in the backdrop of London's Mayoral elections.
In early March 2020, when London was starting to think about Mayoral elections - initially due in May 2020 - we organised a short series of roundtables to discuss key policy issues for the City of London. Following the 12-month postponement of all May elections due to Covid, the London Mayoral elections have now been confirmed for 6 May 2021. Therefore, we have decided to resume our series of events to discuss the key issues facing the new Mayor of London after the elections, ranging from leadership, London’s growth to-the levelling up agenda.
This interactive session will bring together professionals, academics and the public around presentations and a general discussion.
Clare Coghill has been Councillor for the London's borough of Waltham Forest since May 2010 representing the High Street ward in Walthamstow. Clare was appointed Cabinet Member for Children and Young People in May 2012, leading the Council’s work on Children’s Social Care, Safeguarding and Education. In 2014, Clare was appointed Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and High Streets. In January 2017 Clare was elected as Leader of the Labour Group at Waltham Forest Council, and subsequently elected as Leader of the Council at the AGM of Full Council on 25th May 2017.
Nick Walkley is Homes England's former Chief Executive. Nick joined the Homes and Communities Agency in 2017, a year before it was split into two organisations (the Regulator of Social Housing and Homes England). Before joining Homes England, he also worked at Barnet Council, then Haringey Council. As the chief executive of Barnet Council, he oversaw a huge outsourcing programme.
Jonathan Werran is Chief Executive of the indipendent think tank Localis. Jonathan has extensive experience in communications and journalism. After five years as a reporter, commentator and features editor for The Municipal Journal, in 2015 he became the first strategic communications officer for the District Councils’ Network. Prior to The MJ, he edited an online government property and public estate magazine and helped run communications and marketing for anti-poverty charity Elizabeth Finn Care.
Tony Travers is Visiting Professor at LSE's Department of Government and Director of LSE London. His key research interests include local and regional government, elections and public service reform. Professor Travers’ knowledge is frequently sought by policy makers and he has advised a range of select committees and think tanks. He also provides expert analysis for broadcast and print media, regularly appearing on major television and radio networks.
