As we mark five years since the 2019 Hong Kong mass protests and retaliation by China, we welcome journalists, authors, and LSE alumna Shibani Mahtani and Timothy McLaughlin to discuss their timely book: Among the Braves.
Among the Braves is a gripping narrative history of the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement centred around a cast of core activists. Through interviews with activists – many of whom have since been imprisoned by Chinese authorities – and through meticulous research, Shibani and Timothy tell the story of a Hong Kong in turmoil, Hong Kongers in exile, and their ongoing struggle for freedom. This book spans the unique history of Hong Kong as it negotiates its British colonial inheritance and continued Chinese encroachment, yet retains the personal perspective through the eyes of the activists who take to its streets in their fight for democratic values. At a time where political protests seem to be evermore present on our streets and in the media, this book invites us to reflect on what we can learn from Hong Kong, and what it means to be free.
Shibani and Timothy will be discussing their book in The Old Theatre, LSE. There will also be books available to buy after the event.
Meet our speakers and chair
Shibani Mahtani graduated in 2010 with a BSc in Government and History from LSE. She also holds a master's degree from the Graduate School of Journalism, Columbia University. She is an international investigative correspondent for the Washington Post. She was previously the Post's Hong Kong and Southeast Asia correspondent for The Wall Street Journal. Her Hong Kong coverage was honored with prizes including a Human Rights Press Award.
Timothy McLaughlin is a graduate of the University of Southern California and a prize-winning contributing writer for the Atlantic. He has also previously worked for Reuters. His work has appeared in WIRED, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and Prospect. He has won multiple awards for his Hong Kong coverage, including two Best in Business Awards from the Society for Advancing Business Editing, and is a two-time finalist for the Livingston Award for International Reporting.
Professor Leigh Jenco (BA, Bard College; MA and PhD, University of Chicago) joined LSE in 2012, after teaching at the National University of Singapore. She has held visiting positions at the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica, Taiwan; the Department of History, National Taiwan University; and the University of Heidelberg. She is currently Project Lead for the three-year, £1.5 million global convening project Chinese Global Orders funded by the British Academy.
