About me

Tom Bailey works in the history of political thought, with a focus on Kant’s political philosophy, and how historical research can contribute to contemporary debates in political theory. His historical scholarship proposes a novel reading of Kant’s The Doctrine of Right according to which political judgment, rather than a particular institutional scheme – be it republican or liberal -- or a set of substantive human rights, is the core of Kant’s late political philosophy. His research in contemporary political theory is developing a Kantian theory of political judgment which engages with the challenge of theorising politics as a complex practice which we engage in both in agreement, collaboration, and solidarity with others, as well as in conflict, struggle, and resistance against others. He also teaches the history of political theory at LSE and is a Head Class Teacher for the University of London's Online Undergraduate Programmes in Economics, Management, Finance and the Social Sciences.
